DECORATION DAY LADIES: These Columbus, Mississippi women organized the first joint decoration of Union and Confederate graves in 1866. The event was a forerunner of the national Memorial Day. From left, Jane Fontaine, Kate McCarthy Hill Cooper, Augusta Murdoch Sykes Cox, and Martha Elizabeth Morton. They are members of the Hall of Fame of the State of Mississippi.
